CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 1.15-28
Water Rights Planning Model
Proof of Concept for the Development of Base Flows at Core Stations
and at Intermediate Nodes
1.0 ISSUE
This memorandum describes the procedure to be used in developing base stream flows at selected
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) (core) gaging stations. The base flows developed at core stations
will be used to estimate base flows at intermediate points (nodes) within the basin. The following
simplified basin is used to demonstrate the development of base flows at core stations as well as base
flow estimates at intermediate points.
The development of base flows is accomplished using the State of Colorado?s Stream Simulation
Model (STATEMOD).
2.0 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
Simplified River Basin
The Taylor River above Almont, Figure 1, was selected to demonstrate proof of concept. Two
USGS gages are contained in the reach (solid circles): Taylor River below Taylor Park Reservoir
(09109000) and Taylor River at Almont (09110000). The USGS remarks for the core stations are
contained in Exhibit A, and hard copies of all the time series data along with input files to
STATEMOD are contained in Exhibit B. A single diversion structure and reservoir, Vader diversion
(10,010) and Taylor Park Reservoir (20,010), are represented in the system (see Figure 1). The
procedure is to develop base flows at the core stations (09109000 and 09110000) and then to
redistribute the base flows to the intermediate nodes represented in Figure 1 by squares (Inflow 1, 2,
and 3).
I nflow 3
T aylor Park Res 20,01 0
V ader Diversion 10,010
1 0
2 0 4 0
5 0
3 0
0 9109000
0 9110000
I nflow 1
I nflow 2
Figure 1.
