PHYSICAL INFORMATION
1) WSSC Mountain System
The key structures identified in the WSSC Mountain System include Cameron Pass Ditch,
Skyline Ditch, Grand River Ditch, Laramie Poudre Tunnel, Long Draw Reservoir, and Chambers
Lake. Physical information for Cameron Pass Ditch, Skyline Ditch, Grand River Ditch, and
Laramie Poudre Tunnel is presented in the transmountain structure specific memos prepared as
part of SPDSS Task 4. For this reason, this memo will focus on information specific to Long
Draw Reservoir and Chambers Lake.
Long Draw Reservoir (Structure ID 0303676)
Long Draw Reservoir, also known as Grand River
Reservoir, is located high on La Poudre Pass Creek,
near the Continental Divide, approximately 2 miles
downstream from the gaging station for Grand River
Ditch. Long Draw Reservoir is one of two mountain
reservoirs owned by WSSC that provide storage
above the Company's headgate on the Cache la
Poudre River for use in its main supply canal,
Larimer County Canal. Water is conveyed to Long
Draw Reservoir through Grand River Ditch and La
Poudre Pass Creek. Water from Grand River Ditch is Long Draw Reservoir
transmountain water originating from the headwaters of
the Colorado River. Water from the Grand River Ditch flows into La Poudre Pass Creek.
Within two miles, La Poudre Pass Creek discharges into Long Draw Reservoir. Long Draw
Reservoir discharges into La Poudre Pass Creek, which is tributary to the Cache la Poudre River
within approximately two miles. The location of Long Draw Reservoir is shown on Figure 1.
Construction of Long Draw Reservoir began in 1927 and was completed in 1929. The reservoir
has historically been used for storage of irrigation water. In 1974, the reservoir and dam were
enlarged for the primary purpose of providing a more reliable supply of irrigation water for the
lands served by WSSC. Additional purposes for the reservoir enlargement and improvements
included: fish and wildlife conservation and development, recreation, additional eastern slope
storage for water diverted from the western slope, and to provide for annual carryover storage
from wet years to dry years. WSSC paid for the enlargements of Long Draw Reservoir. Water
rights for the original capacity and the additional storage capacity resulting from the reservoir
enlargement are owned by WSSC.
Capacity:
• Total Storage: 11,310 acre-feet.
• Active Storage: 10,625 acre-feet.
• Dead Storage: 685 acre-feet. Purpose for dead storage -Recreational benefit and
propagation of sport fish.
• Outlet Capacity: 560 cfs
• Spillway capacity: 3,400 cfs
WaterSupply&Storage Memo.doc
5 of 21
