Water is released from Riverside Reservoir to the Riverside Canal for delivery to lands within
the District. The unlined outlet canal is approximately 90 miles long with a capacity of 370 cfs.
The canal is siphoned under both Wildcat Creek (3/4 mile siphon) and Aker Draw (quarter mile
siphon). The canal also conveys direct flow and Riverside Reservoir storage water for storage in
Vancil Reservoir, located in the lower portion of the System.
Vancil Reservoir, completed in 1990, is used in the System to store additional water, from
diversions via Riverside Canal, during times of high flows in the South Platte River. Releases
are then made to supplement both direct flow diversions and Riverside Reservoir releases in the
lower portion of the System. The reservoir frequently fills despite having junior water rights. In
addition to providing storage, the reservoir serves as an integral part of the System's recharge
plan providing recharge credit for reservoir seepage losses.
Riverside Reservoir (Structure ID 0103651)
Capacity:
Total Storage: 65,008 acre-feet
There is not a storage restriction on the reservoir.
Active Storage: 57,508 acre-feet
Dead Storage: 7,500 acre-feet due to siltation
Area/Capacity Data: The date of the survey for the elevation -capacity table is
unknown, although the survey was performed prior to 1950.
Table 1
Riverside Reservoir Elevation-Ca acity
Elevation
ft Cumulative Capacity
ac-ft
4477.0 0.0
4480.0 710.0
4485.0 3,391.0
4490.0 8,817.0
4495.0 17,204.0
4500.0 28,859.0
4505.0 43,734.0
4510.0 61,218.0
4511.0 65,008.0
Enlargement History: Riverside Reservoir has never been enlarged.
Reservoir Storage Measurement: Storage levels in Riverside Reservoir are measured using a
staff gage. The Company operates the reservoir such that diversions into storage are
measured at a point just upstream of the reservoir, and the reservoir is filled to a gage
height per the 12/25/1910 rod decree. The Company is responsible for collecting and
reporting the end-of--month storage amount to the Water Commissioner in Water
District 1.
Riverside Irrigation System.doc Page 7 of 14
