Conveyance Efficiency: System-wide conveyance losses in the NPIC System, not including the
Fossil Creek Division, are reported to be 16 percent (CWR&PDA, 1987). According to
NPIC, system losses throughout the NPIC System are greater than 50 percent. NPIC
defines system loss as all possible losses throughout the storage and distribution system
including but not limited to conveyance loss, evaporative loss, reservoir seepage, and
incidental uses.
Return Flow Locations: Return flows from the Munroe Gravity Canal can be intercepted at the
Cache la Poudre River, along Water Supply and Storage Company's Larimer County
Canal, and in the Dry Creek, Boxelder Creek, Coal Creek, and Indian Creek drainages,
all of which are tributary to the Cache la Poudre River.
Irrigated Crops: A 1987 study conducted by Colorado Water Resources and Power
Development Authority estimated that in 1970, total irrigated land under the NPIC
System, not including Fossil Creek Reservoir, was 34,000 acres (CWR&PDA, 1987).
There are a total of 28,109 acres irrigated under the NPIC System based on SPDSS draft
irrigated parcel mapping. Approximately 70 percent of the lands under the NPIC System
are currently flood irrigated; the remaining 30 percent of lands are sprinkler irrigated.
Alfalfa hay represents a maj ority of the irrigated area (approximately 40 percent).
Additional crops grown under the NPIC System include pasture grass, corn, beans,
vegetables, beats, and malt barley.
NPIC shareholders do not typically commingle other ditch share water on their lands.
HydroBase Data: The monthly data available in HydroBase over the 1950-2002 period of
record pertaining to the Munroe Gravity Canal include the following:
Total River Diversions
• Recorded under WDID 0300905 -North Poudre Supply Canal
• Complete record over 1954-2002 (see Figure 4)
• Diversions were not made through the Munroe Gravity Canal prior to water year
1954.
• Available diversions for Munroe Gravity Canal between water year 1954 and 2002
average 34,410 acre-feet per year.
Monthly historical diversions through Munroe Gravity Canal are shown on Figure 4
NorthPoudreMemo.doc 14 of 29
