3) North Poudre Canal Reservoir System
The North Poudre Canal Reservoir System includes the following 4 reservoirs:
Park Creek Reservoir (ID 0303715)
• North Poudre Reservoir No. IS (ID 0303716)
Boxelder Reservoir 1 (ID 0303717) -State Abandonment List
Boxelder Reservoir 2 (ID 0303719)
Reservoirs under the North Poudre Canal Reservoir System are used for system regulation,
irrigation, and for exchange purposes. North Poudre Canal Reservoir System reservoirs are
filled through the North Poudre Canal or its extending laterals. Water stored in the North Poudre
Canal Reservoir System can be used on irrigated lands under the North Poudre Canal or it can be
released to the Munroe Gravity Canal System.
Capacity: According to NPIC personnel, storage capacity under the North Poudre Canal
Reservoir System is as follows:
North Poudre Canal Reservoir System Total Storage 13,097 acre-feet
North Poudre Canal Reservoir System Active Storage 12,943 acre-feet
North Poudre Canal Reservoir System Unavailable Storage 154 acre-feet
The active storage under the North Poudre Canal Reservoir System has varied throughout
the SPDSS study period of 1950 to present due to reservoir renovations, construction of
new reservoirs, and abandonment of reservoirs due mainly to siltation problems. The
NPIC reported reservoir capacity for individual reservoirs is presented in Table 1.
Reservoir Storage Measurement: Storage levels in North Poudre Canal Reservoir System
reservoirs are read monthly by a NPIC employee and reported to the Water District 3
Water Commissioner. Evaporative losses are not charged to any reservoirs under the
North Poudre Canal Reservoir System. Diversion records are calculated from gage
measurement readings and releases from the reservoir, both of which are measured by
NPIC personnel.
Reservoir Seepage Information: NPIC estimates approximately 10 percent seepage loss for its
reservoirs under the North Poudre Canal. There is a general increase in seepage losses as
you move east through the NPIC system. Seepage losses in Park Creek Reservoir and
North Poudre Reservoir No. 15 are generally offset by decreed water rights on Dry
Creek. Losses accrue to the North Fork of the Cache la Poudre River.
HydroBase Data: The monthly data available in HydroBase over the 1950-2002 period of
record pertaining to reservoirs under the North Poudre Canal Reservoir System include
the following:
End-of--month contents
• End-of--month reservoir contents for most of the 1950 - 2002 study period.
• Storage records recorded by NPIC personnel and reported to the District 3 Water
Commissioner on a monthly basis.
NorthPoudreMemo.doc 12 of 29
