Title
SPDSS Task 5 - Key Structure, New Cache la Poudre Irrigating Company and Cache la Poudre Reservoir Company
Description
The New Cache la Poudre Irrigating Company and Cache la Poudre Reservoir Company has been identified as a key structure for the South Platte Decision Support System (SPDSS) consumptive use and surface water modeling efforts. The purpose of this Task 5 memorandum is to document physical, legal, and operational aspects of those key structures identified.

The Timnath Reservoir Inlet Canal diverts water from the Cache la Poudre River for storage.
There is no irrigation under the inlet canal. Storage water in Timnath Reservoir owned by
stockholders of the New Cache Company is generally used for irrigation of lands within the New
Cache System located under Greeley No. 2 Ditch. In addition to being used for irrigation under
the New Cache System, Timnath Reservoir storage water is delivered to Lake Canal Ditch per its
stockholders ownership.
Timnath Reservoir is impounded by an earthen embankment with a rock face on two sides. The
reservoir spillway is located at the right shoulder of the outlet works and is cut into the natural
material. The spillway was constructed as part of the reservoir improvements conducted in 1977.
The outlet works consists of a slant gate located on the upstream face of the dam. Two tower
gates, located in the middle of the dam, control the discharge through the RCP outlet pipe to a
stilling basin located on the downstream side of the dam. From the stilling basin, water either
spills over an ogee crest to the weir measuring water to the Timnath Reservoir Outlet Canal or is
released through additional headgates to a weir that measures releases to the Lake Canal.
The Timnath Reservoir Inlet Canal (aka, Cache la Poudre Reservoir Inlet Canal) (Structure ID
0300924) headgate is located one mile downstream of the Fort Collins Wastewater Treatment
Plant No. 1 on the north side of the Cache la Poudre River. The unlined canal travels
approximately 7 miles in a southeasterly direction and terminates at the reservoir. The canal
crosses Dry Creek, Cooper Slough, and Boxelder Creek as it conveys water to the reservoir.
The design capacity of Timnath Reservoir Inlet Canal was originally 200 cfs. Over the years, the
capacity of the canal has decreased. The current capacity of the channel is a constraint on
storage. The New Cache Company is currently conducting a study on how to maximize the
design capacity of the inlet canal. There is no measurement device on the Timnath Reservoir
Inlet Canal. Diversion measurements are back calculated from the reservoir gage height.
There is one outlet from Timnath Reservoir. This outlet splits into two canals, Lake Canal Ditch
and Timnath Reservoir Outlet Canal, immediately downstream of the reservoir outlet structure.
Flows into Lake Canal Ditch and Timnath Reservoir Outlet Canal are measured by separate
parshall flumes.
New Cache System water is carried in the earth lined Timnath Reservoir Outlet Canal in a
southerly direction for approximately 3 miles, to a point in the southeast corner of Section 12,
Township 6 North, Range 68 West, where it intersects with Greeley No. 2 Ditch. The capacity
of Timnath Reservoir Outlet Canal is approximately 575 cfs.
Releases from Timnath Reservoir into the Timnath Reservoir Outlet Canal are measured through
a 12 foot parshall flume. A separate parshall flume is used to measure releases from Timnath
Reservoir into Lake Canal. These measurements are used by the New Cache Company for
operational purposes and are not reported by the State.
NewCacheMemo.doc 5 of 14
