SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The Moffat Water Tunnel delivers water
from the headwaters of the Fraser River and
the Williams Fork basin, under the
continental divide, into South Boulder Creek.
Water travels down South Boulder Creek to
Gross Reservoir, where it is stored until
needed by Denver Water. The Moffat Water
Tunnel was originally part of the Fraser
River Collection System, Denver's first
transmountain project.
Moffat Water Tunnel was constructed from
the original pilot bore for the Moffat Railroad
Tunnel. Today, Moffat Water Tunnel runs
75 feet south of, and parallel to, the
functioning Moffat Railroad Tunnel.
Water from the Williams Fork basin was originally transported into the South Platte basin via the
August P. Gumlick Tunnel. However, in 1959, Vasquez Tunnel began operation, thereby
transferring the water diverted through August P. Gumlick Tunnel back to the West slope so that
itcould be re-transported to the East slope through Moffat Water Tunnel. Since the construction
of Vasquez Tunnel and the re-diversion of water collected from the Williams Fork basin into the
Fraser River System, the collection system has come to be known as the Moffat Water Collection
System.
This key structure is owned by Denver Water:
Denver Water
1600 W. 12th Ave.
Denver, CO 80204-3412
Phone: 303-628-6000
The location of Moffat Tunnel is shown on Figure 1.
MoffatTunnel.doc 2 of 10
West Portal Moffat Waxer Tunnel
(with Moffat Railroad Tunnel at Left)
