SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Julesburg Irrigation District (District) is an irrigation provider located downstream of Julesburg
Reservoir that includes Julesburg Reservoir storage water and direct flow diversions from the
Harmony Ditch No. 1, Settlers Ditch and Petersen Ditch. Stockholders that own land within the
defined District boundary have shared ownership of the District, and therefore are equally
entitled to the irrigation water. The District has ownership of storage rights associated with the
reservoir and also has ownership of shares in the Harmony Ditch No. 1 Company and Petersen
Ditch Company for direct flow diversions. The District is also responsible for operating the
Harmony Ditch No. 1 headgate. The District was formed in 1904 as an extension of the
irrigation system under the Harmony Ditch No. 1. Julesburg Reservoir and the Highline Canal
were completed in 1906. In the same year, the District purchased water rights in Settlers Ditch
and approximately 80% of the rights in the Petersen Ditch, and expanded its boundary to include
the ditches' service areas.
Julesburg Reservoir, also known as Jumbo Reservoir, is an off-channel reservoir located on the
north side of the lower South Platte River at the boundary of Logan and Sedgwick Counties,
Colorado. Water is conveyed to the reservoir for storage through Harmony Ditch No. 1.
Irrigation water is then released from the reservoir via the Highline Canal. The Highline Canal
directly serves irrigated land within the Julesburg Irrigation District (District) and also conveys
water to both Settlers Ditch and Petersen Ditch. Lands under the Settlers and Petersen Ditches
are also within the District. The Colorado Division of Wildlife manages the Red Lion and
Jumbo State Wildlife Areas, located adjacent to the reservoir. The reservoir and wildlife areas
are popular recreation areas.
Key structures identified in the Julesburg Irrigation District are as follows
1) Harmony Ditch No. 1
2) Julesburg Reservoir
The components of the Julesburg Irrigation District are owned by:
Julesburg Irrigation District
315 Cedar Street
Julesburg, Colorado, 80737
Contact: Larry Frame
Phone: 970.474.3737
The location of the Julesburg Reservoir system is shown on Figure 1.
Julesburg Irrigation District.doc Page 2 of 12
