SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The Jackson Lake & Fort Morgan Canal System (System) is comprised of two primary entities,
the Jackson Lake Reservoir and Irrigation Company (Company) and Fort Morgan Reservoir and
Irrigation Company (Fort Morgan). Jackson Lake Reservoir, owned by shareholders in the
Company, is the primary storage facility for a number of irrigation water providers in the
surrounding area. Water is conveyed to the reservoir for storage through the Jackson Lake Inlet
Canal, and released back to the South Platte River via the Jackson Lake Outlet Canal. Storage
releases are either exchanged upstream or delivered downstream to irrigation water providers
that have ownership in the reservoir. Fort Morgan has majority ownership in the reservoir and
utilizes its storage supply to supplement direct flow diversions via the Fort Morgan Canal.
The Company was incorporated in 1905 in order to purchase the reservoir, inlet and outlet from
the South Platte Land, Reservoir and Irrigation Company. Construction of the reservoir, inlet
and outlet began in 1901 with completion and first fill of the reservoir occurring around 1907.
Fort Morgan, incorporated in 1882, needed to supplement its single direct flow right with storage
water, which led to the purchase of 68% of the reservoir. In addition to Fort Morgan, currently
Bijou Irrigation Company, Riverside Irrigation District, Upper Platte and Beaver Canal
Company, Lower Platte and Beaver Canal Company including Hillrose Irrigation Company, and
Deuel and Snyder Ditch Company all have ownership in the Company and receive water from
the reservoir. Jackson Lake Reservoir is also operated as a State Park where users enjoy fishing
and other recreational activities.
Key structures identified in the Jackson Lake & Fort Morgan Canal System are as follows
1) Jackson Inlet Canal
2) Jackson Lake Reservoir
3) Fort Morgan Canal
The System components are owned by the Jackson Lake Reservoir and Irrigation Company:
Jackson Lake Reservoir and Irrigation Company
218 East Kiowa Avenue
PO Box 38
Fort Morgan, Colorado 80701
Contact: Cindy Vassios
Phone: 970.867.7561
The location of the Jackson Reservoir System is shown in Figure 1.
Jackson Lake Reservoir System Page 2 of 14
