- The City and GLIC also work together to store any additional transbasin water
available to the City beyond the 20 percent C-BT carry over to maximize the
use of Greeley's supplies.
Canal No. 3 is generally able to divert for non-potable irrigation uses throughout the
summer (May-Oct) due to its relatively senior water rights and the location of the ditch
headgate downstream of much irrigation return flow in the Cache la Poudre River basin.
The Laramie River transbasin water (see Table 3), when used, and the storage water
diverted under the high mountain reservoir storage rights are generally available only
during the spring runoff (May and June). These rights are stored in the high mountain
reservoirs during the spring with releases generally made during the late summer, with
the exception of releases for the preferred shareholders, described above.
The high mountain reservoirs provide additional operational flexibility for the City's
water supply operations. They are generally used to store water in the spring with
releases in the latter part of the summer. Greeley's high mountain reservoir system are
emptied at the end of October and do not start storing until the following spring.
- Comanche Reservoir and Hourglass Reservoir are essentially operated as a single
storage unit due to their proximity to one another and their connection by a canal
(80 cfs capacity).
- Upstream storage releases are generally made first from Hourglass Reservoir and
Comanche Reservoir due to the relatively high seepage evidenced from these
storage units.
- Other supplies potentially available to the City come from the reuse of its Windy
Gap supplies and its changed water rights. These uses have not yet been exercised
but will likely start occurring in the near future if drought conditions continue.
Significant amounts of reuse of its Windy Gap supplies and other changed water
rights will like occur if the City moves forward with a Milton Seaman Reservoir
enlargement.
Where to find more information
^ Procedures for determining key diversion structures and a list of all key diversion structures
selected is presented in SPDSS Task 3 -Identify Key Diversion Structures Overall Task
Memorandum.
^ Information on the Bob Creek Ditch and Columbine Ditch is presented in SPDSS Task 4 -
Identify and Fill/Resolve Conflicting Records for Key Transmountain Structures
Memorandum.
^ Procedures for determining key reservoirs and reservoir systems and a list of all key
reservoirs and reservoir systems structures selected is presented in SPDSS Task 5 -
Identify Key Storage Elements Overall Task Memorandum.
^ The Water District 3 Meeting Notes prepared for SPDSS Task 3 -Identify Key Diversion
Structures contains additional information on ditch and reservoir operations within the
Water District.
