The water demands supplied by the Denver Water system are located throughout the Denver
metropolitan area. The Denver Water supply infrastructure within the South Platte River basin is
split into two systems based on locations of components (Northern system and Southern system),
yet the infrastructure and water rights used have built in operational flexibility to be able to
provide water for all uses from all parts of the system.
Key structures identified for the Denver Water system in the South Platte River basin are as
follows:
Northern System
1) Moffat Tunnel
2) Gross Reservoir
3) South Boulder Diversion Canal
4) Ralston Reservoir and Moffat Water Treatment Plant
Southern System
5) Roberts Tunnel
6) Antero Reservoir
7) Eleven Mile Reservoir
8) Cheesman Reservoir
9) Strontia Springs Reservoir and Foothills Water Treatment Plant
10) Denver Conduit No. 20 and Platte Canyon Reservoir
ll) Marston Reservoir and Marston Water Treatment Plant
12) High Line Canal
13) Chatfield Reservoir
Denver Water structures on the western slope are discussed in detailed in the Upper Colorado
River Water Resource Planning Model documentation.
PHYSICAL INFORMATION
Denver Water's supply system consists of the key storage facilities and major diversion
structures that import water into the South Platte River basin and the water rights by which
Denver Water is entitled to divert water. These key structures are operated together to supply
water to a combined service area that includes the City and County of Denver and portions of
Jefferson, Adams, Broomfield, Douglas, and Arapahoe Counties. The key storage and delivery
structures that are owned by Denver Water are classified as two major systems: the Northern
system (also referred to as the Moffat Collection System), which delivers water into the South
Platte River basin via the Moffat Tunnel, and the Southern system, which delivers water into the
Upper South Platte River via the Roberts Tunnel. Both of these systems supplement Denver
Water's South Platte water rights portfolio.
The following sections include physical descriptions of the key structures in the South Platte
River basin followed by a description and discussion of Denver's water rights and operations in
the South Platte River basin.
