of severe and protracted drought, as determined by the state and approved by the District
Engineer, when the reservoir may be allowed to fall below elevation 5423.0 feet msl."
The river control gates located in the control tower of the dam are operated by the COE. When
the reservoir elevation is within the conservation pool, storage releases are determined by the
SEO. When the reservoir elevation is in the flood control or surcharge zone (elevations greater
than 5,432 feet msl), storage and releases are determined by the COE. The COE attempts to limit
the releases so the flow of the South Platte River at the Denver Gage remains less than 5,000 cfs.
The SEO is consulted to ensure that the flow is sufficient to meet downstream demands and is
advised of contemplated releases.
Chatfield Reservoir is an administrative control point on the river for water supplies owned and
used by numerous municipalities with water right interests in Water District 8 and upstream. The
Chatfield Check-Sheet was established in the early-1980s and is used by Water Commissioner
Bob Stahl to account daily how much flow needs to be released from Chatfield Reservoir for
delivery of downstream water rights and natural streamflow conditions. See SPDSS Task 3
Water District 8 Meeting Notes memorandum for more information.
Specifics regarding Chatfield Reservoir include:
• 206,779 ac-ft total flood pool
• Operational surface area of 1,429 acres
• Operational capacity of 27,428 ac-ft
• 7,035 ac-ft minimum pool with 6,692 ac-ft dead storage (13,068 ac-ft active storage capacity)
• Outlet capacity is not limiting and seepage losses from Chatfield Reservoir are minimal
An elevation-area-capacity table for provided by Denver Water is summarized in Table 8.
