Strontia Springs Reservoir was completed in 1983 and is used by Denver
Water as a regulating facility for the Foothills Water Treatment Plant, which receives water via
Denver Foothills Pipeline 26 (aka Conduit No. 26) from the reservoir. The City of Aurora also
uses Strontia Springs Reservoir to regulate diversions to meet its demands. Releases can be made
directly from the reservoir to Aurora's intake (Structure ID 0801001) and Denver Water's
Conduit No. 26 (Structure ID 0801017) -see Figure 2.
The Foothills Water Treatment Plant, also completed in 1983, has an operating capacity of 280
mgd but operators have treatment problems at rates higher than 250 mgd for periods longer than
a week. Diversions to Strontia Springs Reservoir and Foothills Water Treatment Plant include
native and transbasin water, upstream storage releases, and water exchanged from downstream
locations.
Specifics regarding Strontia Springs Reservoir include:
• 7,864 ac-ft total capacity
- Denver Account - 7,163 ac-ft, accounting for 1 ac-ft dead pool
- Aurora Account - 700 ac-ft
• Maximum surface area of 102 acres
• 1,227 ac-ft minimum pool including 1 ac-ft of dead storage (7,863 ac-ft active storage
capacity)
Denver Water Board Operating Memorandum 19 of 40
