6) Antero Reservoir (Structure ID 2303904)
Antero Reservoir was completed in 1909 and is the most upstream reservoir in Denver Water's
Southern system. The reservoir is located in South Park at the confluence of the South Fork of
the South Platte River and Salt Creek and has a drainage area of approximately 185 square miles.
Antero Reservoir is used as a long-term drought storage unit since its junior water rights and
location high in the basin precludes its ability to refill every year.
The reservoir stored over 40,000 ac-ft prior to Denver Water's acquisition of the reservoir in
1924 from the Antero and Lost Reservoir Company. Denver Water was not able to store above
34,000 ac-ft from 1924 to 1958 due to dam safety and seepage issues. A hold order was placed
on the reservoir in 1958 to limit storage to 15,878 ac-ft. The hold order was active until dam
rehabilitation in the mid-1980s brought the reservoir up to its current capacity of close to 20,000
ac-ft.
Specifics regarding Antero Reservoir include:
• 19,826 ac-ft total capacity
• Maximum surface area of 2,307 acres
• 55 ac-ft dead storage
• 19,771 ac-ft active storage capacity used by
Denver Water
~ ~ ~' ,_
• Outlet capacity of 350 cfs Antero Reservoir
• Seepage losses are estimated to be high prior to Photo source: http://www.water.denver.co.gov/
the rehabilitation efforts that were carried out in
the mid-1980s.
An elevation-area-capacity table for Antero Reservoir as provided by Denver Water, as
summarized in Table 3.
Table 3
Elevation-Area-Capacity Data
Antero Reservoir
Elevation Capacity
(feet msl) Area (acres) (ac-ft)
8,923.89 0 0
8,925 31 17
8,927 263 311
8,929 494 1,068
8,930 603 1,616
8,932 887 3,106
8,934 1,227 5,220
8,936 1,492 7,939
8,938 1,801 11,232
8,940 2,053 15,086
8,942 2,307 19,446
8,942.13* 2,323* 19,771
8,944 2,550 24,303
Source: Denver Water
* Interpolated value
Denver Water Board Operating Memorandum 14 of 40
