It was completed in 1937 to
store transbasin supplies from the Moffat system and native flows diverted under Denver
Water's water rights in Ralston Creek and South Boulder Creek. The reservoir is operated as
terminal storage to regulate supply to the Moffat Treatment Plant and for raw service contract
deliveries and has a drainage area of approximately 45 square miles. The Moffat Water
Treatment Plant has an operating capacity of 185 million gallons per day (mgd).
Long Lakes are additional storage reservoirs just upstream from Ralston Reservoir decreed for
irrigation. The lakes are operated as a unit with Ralston, adding an additional 1,724 ac-ft of
storage. Long Lakes are currently within a recreational area in Arvada. The lakes are typically
kept full to ensure sufficient water supply during drought periods to meet local irrigation supply
commitments (see Operational Information section).
Specifics regarding Ralston Reservoir, include:
• 10,776 ac-ft total capacity
• Maximum surface area of 172 acres
• 27 ac-ft dead storage
• 10,749 ac-ft active storage capacity used by Denver Water
Denver Water Board Operating Memorandum 10 of 40
