Title
SPDSS Task 1 - Research and Identify Appropriate Study Period
Description
The objective of this task was to verify or refine the recommended study period as follows: 1. Review the availability and reliability of digitized data required for the development of DSS components; 2. Determine that the period includes wet, dry, and average periods; represents the long-term average hydrology of the basin; and allows for cost-effective modeling efforts; 3. Document study periods used in other modeling efforts in the South Platte Basin.

An analysis of the range of hydrologic conditions was performed by fitting a trend (best-
fit) line to cumulative annual flows for each indicator gage. Significant differences in the
slope of the cumulative flows relative to the slope of the trend line indicate wet periods
(steeper slope) and dry periods (flatter slope). An example of the hydrologic condition
analysis based on cumulative streamflow is presented on Figures 3 and 4. The
cumulative streamflow plot presented for the North Platte River near Northgate, similar
to the other indicator stations, shows that the selected study period includes extended
periods of wet, dry, and average hydrologic conditions.
Figure 3
Example of Cumulative streamflow
North Platte River Near Northgate (06620000) 1950 - 1975
8,000
7,000
6,000
~, 5,000
v
v
v
4,000
0
0
0
3,000
2,000
1,000

Ave

Dry
Ave
Wet
Ave

i°n ~ c°o coo ° ~
rn rn rn rn rn rn
Year
