RGDSS Memorandum
Final
TO: Ray Bennett
FROM: Ed Armbruster, Hydrosphere
SUBJECT: RGDSS Surface Water, Task 9.1 -Calculated Demands
DATE: October 23, 2000
CC: Randy Seaholm
Introduction
This memorandum represents delivery associated with Task 9.1 (Calculated Calibration -Phase
lc monthly model.). The objective of this task was as follows:
Develop and operate demandts to estimate calculated demands.
Overview of Calculated Demands
Task 9 in the development of the Rio Grande Surface Water Model involves operating the model
using calculated demands as inputs. Agricultural calculated demands are based on results of the
consumptive use modeling that was performed by the Consumptive Use Contractor to the
RGDSS project. Other modeled demands (e.g. municipal) are the same as those used in the
historic model data set.
StateMod is capable of accepting calculated demands as either total agricultural demands, or
agricultural Irrigation Water requirements (IWR). Total demand represents the demand at the
farm headgate and includes inefficient water uses (conveyance and application loss). IWR
represents the net on-farm crop consumptive use water requirement for each modeled agricultural
diversion or well structure. For agricultural structures both total and IWR demands consider
historic crop type, climate and soil moisture conditions. If IWR is provided as StateMod input,
demands are calculated by the model "on-the-fly" after considering the efficiencies of water
supplies available to meet the requirement. The nature of the input, i.e. total demand or IWR is
specified by the model user within the diversion station file (*.dds variables idvcom) and well
station file (*.wes variable idvcomw) to achieve the proper demand level discussed below.
Calculated Demand Data Set
The calculated demand data set developed by the Consumptive Use Contractor was provided to
the Surface Water Contractor as a IWR (rgdss.ddc) file. This file contains calculated historical
demands for every agricultural structure represented in the Surface Water and Consumptive Use
models. The file is formatted such that it can be manipulated using the DMI demandts in order
to be separated into two demand files; 1. structures that receive surface water only or surface
water and ground water and 2. Structures that receive ground water only. Also each file is
manipulated, as appropriate, to include demand data for non-agricultural (e.g. M&I) structures.
1:09 PMC:Acdss\Task9-l.doc Calculated Demands October 23, 2000 -Page 1 of 3
