Area-capacity
data were obtained for explicitly modeled reservoirs in Colorado were obtained from the Division
3 office. Area-capacity data for Costilla Reservoir was obtained from the New Mexico State
Engineer's Office.
As previously noted, Eastdale Reservoir No. 1 and Eastdale Reservoir No. 2 are combined into a
single reservoir ("EastRes") for simplifying purposes in the Rio Grande surface water model. An
area-capacity table was estimated for EastRes by simply combining (adding) area-capacity data for
the two individual reservoirs.
Lake SurFace Evaporation
Evaporation data in Division 3 is somewhat sparse, with historical data available at only five
stations. Of these stations, only one (Alamosa WSO AP) is still active. Precipitation data on the
other hand, is collected at 27 stations in Division 3, of which 15 were active through 1997.
Net evaporation values for use in the Rio Grande surface water model were developed by
averaging data at selected precipitation and evaporation stations and taking the difference. Lake
evaporation was determined using a coefficient of 0.7 to adjust from pan evaporation data. Two
different sets of net evaporation values were developed; one for areas within the San Luis Valley
floor, and one for mountainous areas. Reservoirs were then assigned one of the two sets of net
C:Acdss\Task6-8.doc Prepare Reservoir Files September 7, 1999 -Page 5 of 7
