Explanation of the Sample Graph:

The x-axis represents the percent of the basin area represented by each 250 ft elevation band. The
y-axis represents the elevation. The bar colors show the relative amounts of snow in each
elevation bane!. For example, the gray bar at the bottom of the graph represents the area between
8375 ft and 8625 ft (8500 ft +/- 125 ft). That elevation zone constituted 3.5% of the total basin
area. Within that zone, 3.25% of the basin area (93% of the elevation band area) was snow free
(shown with gray shading). The remaining 0.25% of the basin area (7% of the elevation band
area) had less than 5 in of SWE (shown in light blue). The deepest colors represent the greatest
amounts of snow. Selected SNOTEL sites (i.e., G = Grayback, L = Lily Pond, W = Wolf Creek
Summit, U = Upper San Juan) are plotted as points at their elevation to show the relative amount
of observed SWE on that date. If a SNOTEL site is unusually wet for its elevation compared to
SNODAS, it will be plotted further to the right. These graphs could be generated for various dates
and animated to show changes over time.
