Concerns
Operation of Rio Grande Model requires monthly input data to simulate several key basin water
rights and administrative practices (e.g. Rio Grande Compact -monthly forecasted basin
inflows). Daily model operation will require that these monthly files be either a) used by
StateMod internally and used to interpolate daily values; orb) converted to daily inputs via Data
Management Interfaces (DMIs). Implementation and testing of either feature is not expected to
occur until Task 15.
Groundwater Wells
Overview
Groundwater is a significant source of water for agricultural and other water users in Division 3.
As such, and because of stream-aquifer interactions, groundwater use must be represented in any
surface water modeling effort of the Rio Grande in order to accurately represent depletions and
other hydrologic effects.
Objective
Test StateMod's ability to simulate groundwater pumping, including administration of well water
rights and their depletive effects on surface water. This enhancement was necessary because
groundwater represents a large percentage of overall water supply and consumption in the Rio
Grande Basin.
Test Application
A significant design and development effort was required to allow the representation of
groundwater pumping in StateMod modeling system. It required major changes to the StateMod
code, the HydroBase database and DMIs, and the StateMod input files.
Prior to releasing the first edition of the groundwater pumping enhancements to StateMod, the
State worked with Hydrosphere to verify the conceptual design and review interim versions of the
code and model output. The State provided several simple example problems with the first
edition of the groundwater pumping enhancements to StateMod. Hydrosphere ran these
examples, reviewed the output to verify that the code was working as intended, and provided
feedback to the State. Over a period of several months, several issues with the code were
addressed and the well simulation capabilities were judge to be performing as desired. This was
confirmed by running a test application provided by the State, Example No. 7. Hydrosphere ran
this example and reviewed the output, which indicated that the StateMod enhancement was
operating as intended.
A much more rigorous test of the groundwater pumping enhancement to StateMod was the
application to the Rio Grande Model. The addition of groundwater pumping to surface water
model greatly changed the model behavior and results. This led to additional changes and
adjustments to the way the groundwater pumping code operated and the way the input data was
developed. Hydrosphere worked very closely with both the State and the Relational Database
Contractor during development of DMIs capable of extracting and formatting the necessary
model inputs.
C:Acdss\TaskS-5.doc StateMod Enhancements August 15, 2000 -Page 5 of 8
