Share Ownership
There are approximately 285 share owners in the Association. This number may vary from year
to year as shares are sold or otherwise exchanged.
Limitations on Share Use
Shares in the Association are "tied" to specific parcels of land lying within the Association
service area. This means that canal water is attached to specific parcels of land. This
requirement helps to keep water from being moved outside of the ditch service area and reduces
the potential for expansion of irrigated acreage. The Association provides some flexibility on a
year-to year basis such that shares can be used on adjacent lands provided there is prior approval
of the Board of Directors.
Water Rights of the Company
The Association owns 30 different water appropriations on the Rio Grande River. Appropriations
owned by the Association total 1,699.40 cfs. Many of these rights, however, are relatively junior
in priority to other water rights on the Rio Grande and they are frequently called out.
Priority Number Amount Cumulative
(cfs) Amount
28 2.00 2.00
176 2.80 4.80
178 11.20 16.00
188 1.00 17.00
197 20.00 37.00
198 19.60 56.60
202 2.00 58.60
203 2.90 61.50
216-A 318.40 379.90
235 0.60 380.50
276-A 22.80 403.30
288-A 22.70 426.00
312-A 26.00 452.00
338.5-A 33.60 485.60
344 24.40 510.00
358-A 16.60 526.60
363-A 43.40 570.00
363-B 52.00 622.00
365 293.70 915.70
1903-24C 45.00 960.70
1903-30C 84.96 1045.66
1903-34C 48.99 1093.65
1903-37B 38.74 1133.39
1903-41 B 41.34 1174.73
1903-45C 88.14 1262.87
1903-46C 81.71 1344.58
1903-49D 183.60 1528.18
1903-52C 82.68 1610.86
1903-57A 44.92 1655.78
1903-61 A 43.62 1699.40
C:Acdss\RGCanal.doc Rio Grande Canal Water Users Association Interview June 13, 1999 -Page 2 of 7
