Much of the losses experienced by the streams, canals and ditches serve to recharge both the
confined and unconfined aquifers within the Closed Basin. Return flows may also accrue to the
Rio Grande below Alamosa.
River Gains and Losses
Many of the streams and canals in District 35 have significant seepage losses or gains. In fact a
"futile call" situation exists on lower Trinchera Creek below Smith Reservoir during certain times
of the year. Lower Trinchera Creek can lose 7-12 cfs below Smith Reservoir. It has, therefore,
been stipulated that the Commissioner will only deliver 11 cfs from Smith Reservoir to the
Shumaker diversion point when the downstream junior water right is out of priority (otherwise
the full 8 cfs of the Seyfried Stribling Ditch is delivered).
Ute Creek is generally a gaining stream down to the Ute Creek gage. The Sangre de Cristo
stream has high stream losses and beaver dam problems in the vicinity of the Sangre de Cristo
gage. Therefore TIC often uses carrier canals to route water around this reach and into Trinchera
Creek. The upper reach of Trinchera Creek generally loses water when the flow is less than 5 cfs,
but is usually a gaining stream when flows are greater than 5 cfs.
Comments and Concerns
None
Attachments
1.
