The Commissioners noted that several diversion structures that appear in the State's database are
actually water rights that are either all, or in part, carried in other structures. Included are:
San Luis Valley Canal -also carries:
• Blanca Canal
• Kenilworth Canal
Rio Grande Canal -also carries:
• Beidel Ditch
• Enterprise Ditch
• Loma Ditch
• Schacheral Ditch
• Dunning Mill Ditch
• Scotch Ditch
• New Ditch -also carries:
• Stewart Ditch
• Empire Canal
• Leased Water
• Davis Bengle Ditch
These "carrier" structures are noted as such in Attachment 3. The District Commissioners also
pointed out that diversion and irrigated acreage records treat these carried rights as part of the
structure that carries them (e.g. diversion and irrigated acreage records are not separated).
Drainage and Seepage Ditches
Several large drain and seepage ditch systems have been constructed within District 20. Drains
have been constructed in several areas to both drain farm lands and to salvage return flow waters
for additional use. Many of these drain systems have been decreed with water rights for irrigation
purposes. Major drains and seepage ditches within District 20 include:
• Waverly Seepage Ditch 125 cfs
• Meadow Overflow 67 cfs
• Farmers Union Seepage Ditch 65 cfs
• Sand Luis Seepage Ditch 60 cfs
• Bowen Drain 53 cfs
• Prairie Drain Ditch 40 cfs
• Sylvester Drainage Ditch 33 cfs
• Stewart Carmel Drain Ditch 30 cfs
• Getz Seepage Ditch 26 cfs
• Carmel Drain 15 cfs
Use of drains as a water supply is common in District 20, and occurs by way of either direct
diversion (gravity flow) or with the use of pumps. The use of water captured by these drains is
generally not administered by the District Commissioners primarily because of the lack of
resources to do so.
C:Acdss\D20_Mem.doc District 20 Interview July 2, 1999 -Page 4 of 9
