Assets of the Company include two decreed water rights, the Centennial Ditch and associated
diversion and water delivery facilities.
Share Ownership
There are approximately 26 share owners in the Company. This number may vary from year to
year as shares are sold or otherwise exchanged, although in recent years there has been little
change in share ownership. There are approximately 144 shares outstanding in the Company.
Limitations on Share Use
Shares in the Company must be used for agricultural purposes and within the area historically
irrigated with Ditch water.
Water Rights of the Company
The Company owns 2 different water appropriations on the Rio Grande, totaling 82.40 cfs. These
rights are some of the most senior on the Rio Grande.
Priority Number Amount Cumulative
(cfs) Amount
32 47.40 47.40
173 35.00 82.40
The Company will often begin the irrigation season by running approximately 30 cfs in late
March to flush their ditch system. Flow conditions in the Rio Grande are such that the Ditch is
typically able to divert under both priorities by mid-April. The Company will then divert
between 30 and 50 cfs from April 15th to the middle of May, when they begin diverting their full
82.4 cfs. The Company begins to cut back their water use in late August as crop needs decrease,
and usually stop diverting by the end of October. Both of the Company's water rights are almost
always in priority throughout the entire irrigation season (priority number 173 has been called out
twice historically).
The Company participates in the winter recharge program (described below) and will run
between 10 and 20 cfs during January, February and March if winter water is available.
Water Right Changes, Transfers and Agreements
There is one important legal action that affects water supply and operations of the Company:
Winter Recharge: As decreed in Case No. 79CW091, the Company may divert water
under direct flow water rights during the winter months for the purpose of recharging the
unconfined aquifer lying within its service area. Historical practices of the Company
related to recharge is discussed below.
Drainage Water Rights
The Company does not own any drainage or seepage ditch water rights.
C:Acdss\CNTDitch.doc Centennial Irrigation Ditch Company Interview June 22, 1999 -Page 2 of 5
