RGDSS Memorandum Final TO: Ray Bennett FROM: Ed Armbruster, Hydrosphere SUBJECT: RGDSS Surface Water, Task 3.1 -Compile Information on Previous Surface Water Modeling Efforts in the San Luis Valley DATE: April 6, 1999 CC: Randy Seaholm Introduction This memorandum represents the delivery requirement associated with Task 3.1, Compile Information on Previous Modeling Efforts. The objective of this task is as follows: Compile reports, papers, and general information that relate to previous surface water modeling efforts in the San Luis Talley, and specifically the Rio Grande River and its tributaries.. The following memorandum describes the modeling efforts that have been identified in for the Rio Grande River basin within the State of Colorado. Information Sources /Contacts Several water management agencies were contacted regarding previous surface water modeling efforts that have occurred in the San Luis Valley, including: Table 1 is a bibliography of previous surface water modeling efforts identified from these contacts. Only two of these efforts were considered significant in terms of providing useful and helpful information for the RGDSS project: the Conejos River Planning Model (Hydrosphere Resource Consultants, Inc., 1993) and the Rio Grande Water Supply Study (Leonard Rice Consulting Water Engineers, Inc., 1990).. Significant efforts were considered those that model the hydrology, allocation of water to water rights, and reservoir operations in the river basin. Also presented in Table 1 are other modeling efforts that have been conducted in the San Luis Valley that were less substantial in geographic scope or detail of hydrology and water rights administration These other efforts have typically been associated with and supported water right change cases or applications.
