2.0 Summary of Activities
2.1 Snow Plowing of Access Road (June 12, 2008)
Prior to any activity at the Tiger Mine area, the primary access road required plowing of
snow drifts from the previous winter. The snow drifts varied in depth of approximately
lft to aft which would inhibit access to the site by the drilling outfit (HP Geotech). CMC
hired Joe Nachtrieb, retired Professor of Heavy Equipment Operations, to perform the
plowing. Overall, a 100 yard stretch of the road was plowed using a Jolu1 Deere brand
bacldloe/front loader. Pictures of this activity are found in Appendix A.
2.2 Repository Test Pits (June 19, 2008)
Due to the variable distribution of soil within the project area, test pits were performed to
ensure that the area for the proposed repository contained sufficient amount of soil for
capping the relocated mine waste. A total of seven test pits were completed with varying
depths of 6" to over 8 feet were completed on June 19, 2008. GPS coordinates have yet to
be collected. Test pitting was done by a Joe Nachtrieb utilizing the same equipment that
was used for snow plowing. Geologic logging was done by Kato Dee (CMC staff). Photo
documentation of this activity is found in Appendix B.
2.3 Tiger Mine Waste Pile Drilling (June 16 - 17, 2008)
The main Tiger Mine Waste Pile was drilled to aid in accurately deternuning the pile
volume. This is essential for the design of the repository in order to accommodate the
volume. Nine boreholes (Appendix C) were drilled by HP Geotech with a 4" solid auger
down to refusal or bedrock. Borehole logging was performed by Kato Dee (CMC) with
the aid of CMC summer student interns. A soil core was retrieved at every 5 foot depth
interval for material description and chemical analysis on the CMC campus. Borehole
depths ranged from 11.5' - 31.5' bgs on the Tiger Mine Waste Pile. Chemical analysis of
the cores will include:
• XRF analysis for total metals;
• Paste pH
• Specific Conductance and;
• Temperature
Borehole logs that also include photo documentation of each core interval are found in
Appendix D.
