i <br />s <br />i <br />• <br />a <br />Task; 9: Characterize Sources of Metals Loading <br />The University of Colorado graduate and undergraduate student researchers, under the <br />oversight of Dr. Joseph Ryan of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural <br />Engineering have completed their research and analysis of the source, transport, and fate <br />of metals in the Lefthand Creek watershed. This study includes a characterization of <br />met~ils loading sites on James Creek along the restoration project corridor. The results of <br />this :>tudy were documented in a report titled, "Characterization and Prioritization of <br />Mining-Related Metal Sources in the Streams and Streambed Sediments of Lefthand <br />Creek Watershed, Northwestern Boulder County, Colorado, 2002-2003." <br />Task; 10: Evaluation of Project <br />ProjE;ct evaluation has been ongoing and management decisions along the way have <br />beers adaptive to the situations that arise. In evaluating Project Year 2003-2004, the <br />overall restoration strategies and techniques have been completed according to best <br />management practices. The overall projects, goals, objectives and tasks have been met. <br />Since the Phase 1 projects were completed in September 2004, it is too soon to show <br />effectiveness for mitigating sediment loading. We will monitor the project over this winter <br />and during spring run-off to evaluate whether the BMPs are effective. If not, then we will <br />make modifications to the areas during spring and summer 2004 when we implement <br />Pha:~e Two. We will continue to monitor all restoration sites to assess long-tern <br />effectiveness of the project. <br />IV. FUTURE: RECOMMENTATIONS <br />The only recommendation Ihave for project management is to add an addition year or two onto <br />your project planning time to accommodate unforeseen tasks such as the extremely lengthily <br />process thatt some permits may take. Also, it is important to realize that project partners may <br />change throughout the project due to factors outside ones control (i.e. people changing jobs or <br />financial situations). Managers of restoration projects need to be flexible and adaptive to the <br />situation, al~Nays responding to each situation with a "How can we make this work" attitude. <br />V.
