within a single thread channel through the
strategic placement of boulder cross vanes
and large wood bai~lc toe-slope
stabilization structures.
The middle segment extends upstream of a
shotcrete lined in-board drainage ditch
that enters the creels from the highway
immediately upstream of the Glen Cove
Inn. This segment is much steeper than
the lower segment, and is characterized by
steep bedrock and boulder cascades and
brief, lower gradient deposition areas that
exhibit extensive channel braiding and
Figzrre 1. Overvie~~~ o f project area
lateral instability. The project goal for this
segment was to create a single thread channel within these lower gradient areas through
the use of large wood and boulder to re-define the stream baiilcs and provide bai~lc-full
benches for revegatation of the bail{s.
The upper segment is less steep than the middle segment, but somewhat steeper than the
lower segment. The stream through the upper segment exhibits several areas of chamlel
braiding. There is a long segment near the downstream boundary of this segment where
sigiuficant down-cutting of the stream has resulted in a severe gully condition. Stream
bank vegetation is somewhat more robust within this sub-reach; however, the vegetation
consists principally of shallow rooted species that provide little stream bai~lc stability,
particularly in the areas where the channel is severely down-cut. The goal of treatments
in this segment was to control any further down-cutting of the channel, close off multiple
braid channels, and re-slope and re-vegetate eroding stream baiilcs.
Included in the project area are two tributary gullies that head from the Pikes Peak
Highway into the main channel of Sld Creek. Historically the gullies have received
