The U~pe~° Ski Creek Watershed Erosion Control and Reston°atio~r Project was
accomplished with the support of a very broad group of partners. Planning of the project
was done in close collaboration with the Pike National Forest District Office, the City of
Colorado Springs Department of Transportation, and the Unversity of Colorado at
Colorado Springs. hilplementation of the project could not have been possible without
the hard work of arsine-member Roclcy Mountain Youth Corps team who spent two
weeks camping at 12,000 ft in some of the wettest weather Pikes Peak has seen in years.
Out of the 110 tons of rock utilized in stabilizing stream bai~lcs the team moved almost
100 tons by themselves by hand! Much of the seeding and placement of the erosion
control matting was completed through the efforts of 37 volunteers from the local chapter
of the Sierra Club, Sanborn Camps, and the Odyssey School Marry of the vohmteers
were between the ages of 12 and 15 and this project provided a great opportunity for
RIVIFI to show the importance of engaging in enviroiunental stewardship. The kids did a
great job and it was very rewarding experience for all involved. Special thanks go to our
two interns, Lukas Strandberg from Willamette University and Liza Mitchell from
Colorado College. Lukas and Liza contributed over 250 hours to the project completing
much of the pre-project baseline data and helping with the volunteers and RMYC in
implementing the project. The value of labor provided by our volunteers and interns was
over $13,000. In addition to the $15,000 project grant from the Colorado Water
Conservation Board, funding for the project was provided by a $35,000 MAP grant from
the National Forest Foundation, and a $37,458 grant from the Pikes Peak Fund.
13
