SPDSS Task 40.2 Technical Memorandum
for the original wells. Therefore, from the list in Table 1, there were no potential
candidates. At that time, the State requested that the ground water consultant
undertake no further efforts on evaluating other potential candidate wells.
Summary and Conclusions
CDM performed Task 40 to identify and evaluate abandoned and/or replacement wells
for conversion to monitoring wells in the Denver Basin Region. This Technical
Memorandum describes the methods and sources of information available during Phase
2 of the SPDSS. The data was used to help identify candidate wells that could be
converted to monitoring wells in the Denver Basin Region and support the design of the
ground water field program. Below are conclusions from completion of this Phase 2
task.
• Using the SEO's list of applications for replacement wells a total of 35 wells were
identified as potential candidates for conversion to permanent monitoring wells
within the Denver Basin Region.
• The CWCB was unable to find original (rather than replacement) well permits for
potential candidates.
• There are no abandoned wells identified in the SEO database within the Denver
Basin Region that could be used as potential candidates for conversion.
• The State requested that this Task not be pursued any further in Phase 2 and be
eliminated from Phases 3-5.
Recommendations
The following are recommendations based upon the activities performed in the SPDSS
Phase 2 Task 40:
• Revise the well replacement process to easily identify wells slated for
replacement as they are submitted to the State allowing for real-time
identification of candidates for conversion.
• Retain well permit information for original wells that have been replaced and
provide ability to correlate with replacement well.
• Re-evaluate this task in Phase 3 using candidates identified through recent
replacement submittals and identified through Task 37.
