Colorado Ui~lch Ii-etlcnuls Bench Test
Tec/n n cal llen~ orcm~lr ~ m
4.0 Hydraulic Testing of Bioreactor Cells
hi order for hydraulic conductivit<r to be estimated for the substrate. flow rate and other
measurements should be made as described below each of the final two weeks of the test (8
measurements in total). A sample table is provided belo~y for clarification. Actual field measurements
should be recorded on the H~-draulic Conductivity Measurements sheet provided as Attachment D.
1. Suspend floe- to the individual SRBR cells by shuttilig off the timers.
2. Measure the height of the reactor drum (should be the same for all events).
3. Place a temporary plug/stopper on the outlet hose and place outlet hose in a flo«--measuring
device.
4. Add three to five gallons of mine ~~-ater to the cell being tested (start with Cell 1).
5. Measure the distance from the top of the drum to the top of the ~z-ater.
H. Measure the distance from the top of the drum to the top of the outlet hose.
7. Measure the distance from the top of the drum to the top of the substrate.
8. Remove the stopper plug in the hose and simultaneously start a stopwatch.
9. Measure the flow volume leaving the cell at time zero (0) over the course of 15 seconds (0.25
minutes) and record the value in milliliters.
10. Replace the plug/stopper and stop the stopwatch after 15 seconds.
11. Measure the distance from the top of the drum to the top of the water and record the value.
12. Reopen the stopper and let water flow for one minute; replace the stopper and repeat the
measurements described in Steps 9 and 11.
13. Repeat measurements descr7bed in Step 12, three tunes.
14. When ~-ou have completed the measurements for Cell 1, repeat Steps 3 through 13 for Cells
2, 3, 4, and ~.
12 CMC NRM
