suggest that the substrate material is contributing additional manganese to the effluent
water. It is unlalown which substrate material may contain manganese.
COIICIUSlo11
The cells that received the Colorado Gulch influent water showed a definite ability to
remove aluminum, copper, and zinc for which all substrate mixtures would be adequate
for a large scale SRB system for AMD water in Colorado Gulch. However, since the test
was completed during the fall/early-winter months, the contributions of AMD from the
Little Frying Pan Gulch and Tiger Mine Complex is likely small compared to spring run-
off.
The elevated levels of iron and manganese are likely to originate from the substrate
material since the concentrations in Colorado Gulch and municipal drinking water had
lower levels than the effluent from each cell It would be beneficial to digest each
substrate material to determine where the source of excess iron and manganese are
originating.
6
