surveyed, more accurate groundwater fluxes can be calculated during the Phase 4 Task 48
groundwater modeling.
6.0 Recommendations
Below are reconmlendations from the activities performed under Task 39, for consideration
during future water level data collection:
^ Continue to collect autunul water levels from the DWR water level monitoring network to
assess seasonality in aquifer water levels, with a focus on wells that appear to be less affected
by localized pumping or other influences (Table 2).
^ Identify and instrument additional wells wit11 continuous recorders. These wells should be
observation wells, abandoned wells or wells that are no longer in use so t11at localized
pumping effects are minimized. Candidate wells include alluvial wells currently measured
by fl1e DWR, Metro Wastewater Reclamation District, Colorado Air National Guard, and
USGS sites included in the AgLUS and NAWQA well monitoring programs. The
instrumented wells should target aquifers which are underrepresented in Table 2,
specifically the Arapahoe and Dawson aquifers. Monitoring of the aquifers should be for at
least several years, until long-term and seasonal trends can be determined. These additional
continuously-monitored wells should be added to fl1e DWR monitoring network.
^ The DWR should continue to solicit water levels and CDM should stop its solicitation to
avoid duplication of effort. The DWR should request monthly measurements in its annual
solicitation if such data are collected.
^ Continue coordinating with DWR staff conducting spring water level measurements to make
well owners aware of the SPDSS autumn data collection process and thus increase the
number of positive responses for autumn measurements.
^ Add wells to the water level monitoring network >11 areas of aquifers where there are
currently no wells, to gain better understanding of both long-term and seasonal water level
trends.
^ Evaluate well screen and well sensing intervals for any new bedrock wells that maybe
incorporated into the DWR water level monitoring network so the water levels can be
attributed to a specific aquifer or aquifers.
^ Maintain documentation of wells in the DWR water level monitoring network, including
accurate well location maps, addresses, contact information, and other pertinent information
for water level data collection.
^ Continue collecting 1lourly water level data at the data-logger-equipped SPDSS alluvial and
bedrock monitorng wells and download these data two times per year. Downloaduzg the
data more frequently t11an during P11ase 3 is an expansion of the program but is warranted to
mininuze gaps in data collection or systematic drift i11 readings associated with equipment
malfunctions, as occurred in isolated cases during Phase 3. It is anticipated that this will be
undertaken by the SPDSS Grotmdwater Contractor during fl1e upconung Phase but will be
transitioned to the DWR as part of their ongoing monitor>11g program.
^ Continue to evaluate the drift in the data loggers on an annual basis and plan to periodically
re-calibrate the data loggers as needed, by SPDSS contractors and later by DWR staff.
SPDSS Phase 4 Task 39 Technical Memorandum-Final 23
O~i20%2008
