Water Level Conductivityy Meter or M-scope
To obtain a water level measurement using a conductivity meter or M-scope, one
needs to open the well to allow for a well measurement, disinfect the probe,
lower the conductivity probe into the well until a 'beep' is heard indicating water
has been encountered, read the graduated tape attached to the probe at a
specified measuring point, and then retrieve the probe.
Pros: Graduated tape is accurate to 0.01', provides clear indication of water level.
Cons: Many wells do not have large enough access ports for the probe; probe
may become tangled with electrical wires while being lowered in well; time-
intensive process to deploy and retrieve in deep wells; may require two people to
operate in deep well; requires disinfection; depth limited to length of cable
attached to the probe. (The depth limit of the conductivity meters used is 1,500
feet.)
1.1.2 Field Measurement of Autumn Water Levels
Phase 3 field water level measurements were collected during November 2005.Of the 112 wells
targeted for measurement, 83 were to be physically measured by CDM and 29 measurements
were solicited from other entities. Eighty-one of the 83 wells identified for measurement were
visited, and data were successfully obtained at 72 of these wells.
Notes made by the DWR during previous spring measurements were reviewed to identify
specific instructions for each well. If the notes indicated the well owner wished to be notified
prior to measuring the well, CDM notified the well owner before initiating the field activity.
Two sites were not visited, because the well owner could not be contacted during multiple
attempts.
An attempt was made to contact each well owner prior to measuring the water level in their
well by either scheduling in advance an appointment with the owner, or knocking on the door
of private residences. A letter describing the SPDSS and the autumn water level collection
process was provided to each well owner, either in person or by leaving the letter at the door if
no one was home. A copy of the letter provided is presented in Appendix B.
Including the above two cases of not making contact with the owner, 11 measurements could
not be obtained during this collection program. The reasons a physical measurement was not
obtained include:
• Access denied (1)
• Well was not located (1)
• Obstruction in well (2)
• Could not measure with equipment well owner requested be used (1)
• Unable to obtain definitive measurement (2)
• Unable to coordinate with owner who had requested contact prior to measurement (2)
• Water level deeper than equipment could read (2)
SPDSS Phase 3 Task 39 Technical Memarandum -Final
09/27/2006
