the DWR. The differences in elevations at these 15 sites range from 0.2 to 12.4 feet and
average 4.6 feet. These elevation differences have a direct effect on groundwater elevations,
and are considered to be large with respect to the very low hydraulic gradients present in the
study area. The water level data from wells without surveyed measuring point elevations
could have this range of uncertainty inherent in them. The survey results will allow more
accurate groundwater fluxes to be calculated during Phase 4 Task 48 groundwater modeling.
5.0 Recommendations
Below are recommendations from the activities performed under Task 39, for consideration
during future water level data collection:
^ Continue to collect autumn water levels from the DWR bedrock water level monitoring
network to assess seasonality in aquifer water levels.
^ Continue coordinating with DWR staff conducting spring water level measurements to make
well owners aware of the SPDSS autumn data collection process and thus increase the
number of positive responses for autumn measurements. As an example, the DWR could
state in their water level solicitation letter that autumn measurements will also be solicited
for the SPDSS in the upcoming years.
^ Evaluate well screen and well sensing intervals for any new bedrock wells that may be
incorporated into the DWR water level monitoring network so the water levels can be
attributed to a specific aquifer or aquifers.
^ Update documentation of wells in the DWR water level monitoring network, including
accurate well location maps, addresses, contact information, and other pertinent information
for water level data collection.
^ Continue collecting hourly water level data at the SPDSS alluvial and bedrock monitoring
wells and download these data one time per year. If downloads at a one year interval reveal
unacceptable drift error, future downloads should be conducted on a more frequent interval.
^ Continue to evaluate the drift in the data loggers and plan to periodically re-calibrate the
data loggers as needed.
^ The Task 48 alluvial groundwater modeling calibration should take into account the
potential inaccuracy of water level elevations from wells without surveyed data for the
measuring point elevation.
^ The measuring point elevations of the DWR alluvial monitoring wells not surveyed under
this task should be surveyed at a later time to improve the accuracy of the groundwater level
elevation data.
6.0 References
Colorado Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Resources (DWR). 1985.
