SPDSS Phase 3 Task 39 Water Level Measurement
Technical Memorandum
FINAL
To: Ray Alvarado
From: Camp Dresser and McKee Inc.
Donavon Paschall, Hanna Gilbert, Matt Bliss, Andy Horn, and Gordon McCurry
Subject: SPDSS Groundwater Component Phase 3, Task 39.4
Final Water Level Measurement Technical Memorandum
Date: September 27, 2006
Introduction
The groundwater component of Phase 3 of the South Platte Decision Support System (SPDSS)
focuses on compiling and evaluating available relevant data to support the Decision Support
System for the South Platte River watershed, and to add the data to HydroBase, the State of
Colorado's hydrological database. The SPDSS groundwater study area is presented in Figure 1.
For the purposes of the SPDSS, the groundwater study area is divided into two hydrologic
regions. The Denver Basin Region includes the bedrock aquifers of the Denver Basin. The South
Platte Alluvium Region consists of the unconsolidated deposits of the South Platte River main
stem, extending downstream from just below Chatfield Reservoir to the Nebraska state line at
Julesburg. The South Platte Alluvium Region also includes the alluvial systems overlying the
Denver Basin Bedrock Aquifers in Water Division 1.
This task was undertaken for the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and the Division
of Water Resources (DWR), under Task 39 of Phases 2 and 3 of the SPDSS by Camp Dresser &
McKee (CDM). Phase 3 of Task 39 is comprised of three major subtasks: Task 39.1, water level
measurements and data download; Task 39.2, selection and instrumentation of four bedrock
monitoring wells; and Task 39.3, surveying of selected monitoring wells.
The objective of Task 39.1 was to collect autumn groundwater level data for the bedrock and
alluvial groundwater systems in the Denver Basin Region to supplement data collected by the
DWR in the spring of each year. In addition water level data from automated water level
pressure transducer and data loggers (data loggers) installed in the SPDSS monitoring wells
were downloaded. It is anticipated this task will be conducted through Phase 5 of the SPDSS.
The Phase 3 methods and results of this task are described in Section 1.
The objective of Task 39.2 was to identify and equip suitable wells for continuous monitoring of
water levels in the Denver Basin bedrock aquifers. These wells were selected to provide
continuous records of water level fluctuations in areas near major pumping centers. The Phase
3 methods and results of this task are described in Section 2.
SPDSS Phase 3 Task 39 Technical Memarandum -Final
09/27/2006
