Controlling nutrient levels will provide many benefits. For water providers, decreased nutrient
loads translate to reduced treatment costs, a higher perceived quality and greater customer
satisfaction. With federal nutrient regulations on the way, acting locally now also means
avoiding costly federal controls later. For farmers, benefits include decreased costs, safer
herds, and more reliable irrigation flows. For recreational users, nutrient control means safer
and more enjoyable water sports. For communities, healthier water has a variety of important,
positive economic impacts. And for wildlife, improved conditions in the area's streams, lakes,
and reservoirs help to maintain ecosystems.
With nutrient control, northern Colorado's water bodies will continue to have the beauty
and comparatively high water quality that residents and businesses have come to expect
and enjoy. To preserve and improve our water systems, everyone needs to pull together
now in a united effort to manage nutrient levels.
-17-
