crdssgr
Database utilities (such as the program) each have the standard command line option , which
-h
prints a short summary of the program?s usage. The option is also available to print the program
-v
version. Note that these command line options are only implemented for programs written for the
CRDSS and some public domain programs (commercial software such as INFORMIX) may not follow
this convention.
UNIX man pages have been implemented for all database programs and library routines and can be
man
accessed from a UNIX shell using the UNIX command. Many of the man pages are also accessible
Mosaic
from the on-line documentation. The Database chapters of the CRDSS Users? Manual and
CRDSS Developers? Manual present this documentation. Minor utilities that are used only once during
data processing (e.g., UNIX shell scripts) are not documented with man pages. Task Memoranda 1.05-
11 and 1.05-12 present information on man pages as well as documenting program code.
Hard-Copy Documentation
A Database chapter is available in both the CRDSS Users? Manual and CRDSS Developers? Manual .
Each chapter presents overview material and includes supporting materials such as UNIX man pages and
database design documents. The CRDSS Users? Manual also summarizes the contents of the database.
The Microsoft Windows program ERWIN (Entity Relationship for WINdows) was used to define the
structure of the database, and output from ERWIN that illustrates the database design is included in the
Database chapter of the CRDSS Developers? Manual
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The following conclusions and recommendations are made regarding documentation for the CRDSS
database:
The work products as defined in the scope of work have been completed.
?
The methods used to document the database work well and are cost-effective. Year 2 efforts
?
Mosaic
will build on the work started in Year 1, including updating the documentation, keeping
UNIX man pages current, and periodically updating the Database chapters of the CRDSS
Users? Manual and CRDSS Developers? Manual . Review of the documentation by a greater
audience will be beneficial.
2
A275 01.09.95 1.16-2 Malers, Rohlfs
