migration. Documentation for database access software, including utilities (e.g., browse utilities)
and library routines (see Task Memorandum 1.05-8 for background on DMI library routines) will be
developed as software is developed.
The development of overview documentation will be the responsibility of RTi. Technical
documentation related to the database structure will also be the responsibility of RTi. Technical
documentation for database utilities, library routines, and population procedures will be the
responsibility of the persons who do the development work in those areas and will be reviewed and
coordinated by RTi.
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The following recommendations are made regarding documentation for the CRDSS database:
Database documentation that describes the overall organization of the database will be
?
available in on-line form and will include graphics that illustrate the components of the
database. Overview information will be oriented to the needs of users. Detailed
information on database structure and the utilities and routines that access the database will
be provided for developers, but will be also accessible to interested users. Documentation
that is available in on-line form will be printable using standard methods.
Mosaic
The public domain program will be used to provide on-line documentation for
?
users and developers. UNIX man pages will be used for technical documentation for
database utilities and database access routines. Task Memorandum 1.05-12 describes how
Mosaic
to implement documentation and UNIX man pages. Some database documentation
may consist of PostScript files created by database utilities (e.g., ERWIN) which can be
Mosaic
displayed by . Context-sensitive help from within database applications is being
studied but may pose technical problems that will require extensive budget to implement.
Documentation for users will include overview descriptions of the database structure and
?
the database utilities. Technical documentation will describe specific database structure
items (e.g., entity relationships and data dictionary), database utility descriptions, and
database access library routines. Documentation will be placed under revision control and
will be updated as the database and related software are updated.
2
A275 6.29.94 1.16-1. Malers, Rohlfs
