CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 1.05-29
System Integration Issues
PC Access of the CRDSS
1.0 ISSUE
It has repeatedly been brought to the attention of the consultant by the TAC and others that there is a
great deal of interest among water users and managers in accessing the CRDSS database.
Additionally, concern has been voiced that only users who have a UNIX workstation will be able to
access the CRDSS. The State has indicated to the consultant that the CRDSS is to be developed for a
UNIX platform (and specifically SGI workstations). Many of the applications that are being
developed or utilized for the CRDSS are unlikely to be able to run on a PC because of the
performance limitations of PCs and PC operating systems. However, the consultant is making
provisions during development to allow PC access of the CRDSS wherever possible. This
memorandum addresses some of the technical issues related to PC access of the CRDSS as well as
summarizing some of the policy issues (and their influence on technical decisions) that must be
resolved in order to facilitate CRDSS access by PCs.
Technical issues:
What types of communications hardware and software are necessary (or will be necessary)
?
for a PC to access the CRDSS?
How can CRDSS applications be supported on PCs and UNIX workstations without
?
carrying out two development efforts?
What products are needed by water users (graphs, reports, model output) and how can these
?
products be produced for PC users?
Can communication between PCs and the CRDSS be two-way?
?
Policy issues:
Who are the water users (that will likely access the CRDSS using PCs)?
?
What is the level of support that the State is willing to give to PC users (in terms of
?
supporting dialup capabilities, database retrieval capabilities, and display capabilities)?
Will the State allow users to run models or just retrieve data?
?
If the State allows users to retrieve data from the CRDSS database, will there be some type
?
of fee initiated to pay for the service?
2.0 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
1
A275 06.29.94 1.05-29 Malers
