Daily backup tapes will consist of ninety-three tapes each of which will be labeled with a day and
four months, as the following example:
1
Daily
Jan
Apr
Jul
Oct
This indicates that the tape will potentially be used for daily backups every fourth month, at which
time the contents of that daily backup will be lost.
Weekly incremental backups will be made every two weeks and will consist of files changed in the
previous week. Such backup tapes will be kept indefinitely. These tapes can be reused if files can be
reloaded from total backup tapes.
Total backups will be made every two weeks or every month, depending on the amount of files being
loaded, and will be saved indefinitely. These backups are not convenient for reloading lost files
because of the large volume of material on the tape. Consequently, incremental backups will be used
for reloading lost files where possible. Total backups are useful when reloading software because of
a disk failure or other hardware problem. Total backups usually require human intervention because
more than one tape may be needed. Consequently, total backups may be run during the day (e.g., at
lunch), and may be run over several days (several directories or partitions a day).
Log files for backups will be removed when the tape corresponding to the backup is reused. Log
files may potentially require a great deal of space on the system. RTi typically compresses the files
compress
using the UNIX command. If log files use space needed for other applications, the log
files can themselves be written to tape and can be scanned directly from the tape on which they are
written.
The most recent backup tapes will be stored at RTi's office in Fort Collins. Some recent backup
tapes and most of the older backup tapes will be stored off-site. This ensures that a disaster at RTi
(e.g., fire) will not destroy all of the backup tapes. Multiple copies of important total backup tapes
(e.g., backups of stable prototypes) will be stored at different locations.
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The following recommendations are made regarding system backups:
Backups will be made for all important files on all CRDSS machines at RTi. The State and
?
CSU will be required to perform backups of machines on their sites. Daily work for CSU
will be copied to RTi each day before backups are carried out.
Daily backups will be incremental and will have a one-day interval. Weekly backups will
?
be incremental and will have a one-week interval. Total backups will have a variable
interval based on file-system activity but will be no greater than one month apart.
3
A275 05.10.94 1.05-24 Malers
