Running a program in this way uses the "remote" machine as the server, and the "local" machine as
the client.
PC Access to CRDSS
The State has indicated that the CRDSS software is to be written for SGI workstations. However,
PCs will be able to access the CRDSS if they are installed with TCP/IP communications software
and/or X Window System emulation software. This software allows a user working at a PC to login
to a UNIX workstation and run applications on the workstation. Graphics can only be displayed on
the PC if X Window System emulation software is available on the PC (programs are set to display
on the PC by following the instructions in the previous section).
The RTi team is developing software according to industry standards. Consequently, software may
be ported to PCs in the future. However, it is anticipated that only UNIX workstations will have
enough system resources to run many of the CRDSS applications. It is therefore assumed that PCs
will continue to serve mainly in a display-only role in the CRDSS, and not as a computational tool.
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The following conclusions and recommendations are made regarding Internet use:
E-mail will be implemented using standard UNIX and public domain software to provide
?
all team members with a method of communicating information electronically.
Disk resources will be shared using NFS.
?
Devices will be shared using NFS and by using SGI software.
?
ftp
Files will be transferred using the program. It is recommended that State personnel
?
involved with providing data to RTi become familiar with this program.
Database programs will run in client-server mode using INFORMIX communications
?
software, which relies on the Internet. Programs that use GUIs can use the X Window
System variable to run applications remotely while displaying graphics locally.
DISPLAY
During Year 1, PCs will be used as display-only devices and will not run the CRDSS
?
applications. Changes in the State's computing environment and in the goals for the
CRDSS in later years may result in modeling applications being run on PCs in later years.
4
A275 05.10.94 1.05-19 Malers
