CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 1.05-19
Study of System Integration Issues
Internet - General Use of in CRDSS
1.0 ISSUE
RTi is connected to the Internet via a 56Kbps dedicated line from CSU. This connection allows RTi
to use the E-mail, file transfer, and remote login capabilities of the CRDSS workstations. The
Internet feed from CSU is controlled by an intelligent router that only allows predetermined sites to
communicate with RTi via the Internet. Only sites which are needed for the CRDSS work (including
data sources, knowledge sources, software/hardware support, and project team members) are on the
access list. RTi has an internal network that allows all workstations and PCs to communicate with
the CRDSS workstations.
The State is connected to the Internet via a 56Kbps connection supplied by Colorado SuperNet. The
State maintains an internal network that allows their workstations and PCs to communicate.
The following general issues will be discussed in this task memorandum:
How will E-mail be implemented and used?
?
How will disk resources be shared?
?
How will devices be shared?
?
How will file transfers be made?
?
How will programs run in client-server mode?
?
How can programs be run on one machine while displaying on another machine?
?
How are PCs to be used in the CRDSS?
?
2.0 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
The use of Internet for the CRDSS work will generally take advantage of existing UNIX and third-
party software. Most of the discussion in this task memorandum refers to specific UNIX software
products but does not attempt to explain those products in detail. If more detail is needed, it is
suggested that the UNIX system documentation be consulted. The UNIX books by O'Reilly &
Associates, Inc., are also very good references.
The State has said that the Internet will eventually be used to connect all important remote offices
(e.g., water district offices). However, it is unclear whether a schedule for implementing this
communication has been created. RTi assumes that remote sites that wish to access the CRDSS will
have access to the Internet.
1
A275 05.10.94 1.05-19 Malers
