Item Source Language Description
MODSIMCSU-LabadieC, Xlib A network display tool has been developed for MODSIM. This tool has many
of the features needed in a network display/editor. However, some of
the features may be too specific to MODSIM - there may be too many features
for viewing data required by MODSIM. If MODSIM is chosen as the water
rights planning model, it is likely that the tool could be ported and used
quickly. However, if network data is to be stored in the DB in a generic
fashion for different models, a more generic tool would be useful.
IDSCSU IDSC, MotifA network display tool has been developed by IDS. The network editor
represents reservoirs, canals, and other surface water features as icons and
connections between icons. Models have been developed to model the
quantity and quality of surface water and have been integrated into a surface
water modeling system presented in a GUI. The network editor is data-driven
and is not site-specific. Presently, the network editor allows the user to
display a schematic of the canal system that is used to deliver water to the
different locations. Demand for each location can be modified dynamically and
the network editor can be used to alter the hydrologic and hydraulic parameters
of the water delivery system for modeling purposes.
RTiRTiCRTi has developed some low-level routines for storing representations
of and analyzing networks. These routines use linked lists that allow
large networks to be stored and skipped through. Although RTi has not
developed a full-blown network editor, some of the routines may be useful
in doing so. RTi also has experience with NWS code that displays a
river system in schematic fashion using the Motif tree widget.
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The MODSIM model already has a well-developed network interface that runs on a UNIX
workstation; the other water rights planning models evaluated do not. Consequently, the interface
for MODSIM will be used as a starting point for the development of a network display tool.
Although other applications may use the display tool, it is likely that only the Big River model and
water rights planning model will require the tool in Year 1.
Communications with CSU indicate that the MODSIM interface does have certain limitations
(examples are that the network cannot be zoomed, and there is currently no way to overlay physical
representation data on a network display). Improvements to the interface will be made if such
improvements are necessary (and highly desirable). All code will be QA/QCed by RTi staff to
ensure that programming and documentation standards are followed
Display details will be developed using the guidelines described in other DMI and GUI task
memoranda. More specific features of the network tool are being developed.
3
A275 05.10.94 1.05-17 Malers
