Sample DMI Interface
Figure 2 generally illustrates how a DMI interface to create scenario data for a model might look.
The DMI interface will contain basic information about the data set, including the source of data and
the output format. The intelligence associated with each DMI utility will be manifested as a control
panel that lists the data that can be viewed/edited during the transfer (lower left in figure). If an item
is selected, e.g., "Structures", a detailed data display/editor form will be displayed (right side in
figure). This form will be the same form discussed in Task Memoranda 1.05-15 and 1.05-16;
however, for modeling, the DMI utility will also display an edit side that is parallel to the view side.
This will allow the baseline data to be viewed while a scenario is edited. Intelligence will be built
into such forms such that parameters which are not editable will not have an edit area. The edit
capability may include range checks on certain data, where applicable. For example, entering an
unusually small or large value in a field will trigger a warning message.
If a displayed form contains too much information to allow a parallel display of baseline and
scenario data, then other display methods will be used. These may consist of a toggle button that
allows the scenario form to be "swapped" with the baseline form, or a more concise treatment of
scenario data, e.g., instead of showing a parallel monthly curve, a single percentage value would be
shown that is to be applied to the baseline curve. In all cases, features such as color and/or font will
be used to indicate scenario data that are different from baseline data. For example, if the color blue
is used to display baseline data, then red could be used to indicate scenario data that are different
from the baseline. This will allow the user to easily determine which scenario data are different from
the baseline.
Baseline: Gunnison.bas Structure Detail
BaselineScenario
Scenario: BigFlood.scenario
Capacity=1000Capacity=2000
Editable parameters...
Network
Flows
Water Rights
Structures
Figure 2. Sample DMI detail form
As discussed previously, the ability of DMI utilities to manage scenarios will not be fully
implemented until Year 2. However, because the display and edit halves of the display forms will be
very similar, the baseline data in Year 1 could be modified when the DMI utility is executed,
4
A275 05.10.94 1.05-9 Malers
