CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 2.09 -20
Summation of CU Estimates (Irrigation and Other Uses) for Selected Basins
Within the Colorado River Basin for calendar year 1985 -1990
1.0 ISSUE
This task memorandum summarizes the results of consumptive use (CU) for
irrigated areas and other uses (livestock, stockponds, municipal, thermal electric,
mineral resources, and export) associated with the Yampa, White, Upper
Colorado, San Juan, and Dolores River Basins.
2.0 DISCUSSION
Crop consumptive use has been estimated for selected structures in each of the
River Basins mentioned previously through the use of the CRDSS -CU model
using water supply values calculated by STATEMOD. The details of the methods
used and the results for each structure being modeled are found in the following
task memos:
Upper Colorado River Basin Task Memo 2.09 -05
White River Basin Task Memo 2.09 -06
Yampa River Basin Task Memo 2.09 -07
San Juan and Dolores River Basin Task Memo 2.09 -08
The consumptive use for other uses is obtained from information from different
sources. The following is a summary of the information sources used to calculate
the consumptive use for other uses:
Livestock: The number of livestock for each county were obtained from the
census of agriculture that is conducted every 5 years. The values for 1982, 1987,
and 1992 were used to linearly interpolate and obtain the values for years 1985
to 1990.
Stockpond: The stockpond areas were obtained by using the State
Engineer's Office stockpond database.
Reservoir: The reservoir evaporation values were reported by the United
Stated Geological Survey in their report: estimated use of water in the united
states in 1990.
Municipal: The population values reported in the US Census data for 1980
and 1990 were used to linearly interpolate and obtain population values for 1985
to 1990. Per capita usage was used to calculate CU.
Mineral: The mineral resource CU values were reported by the United
Stated Geological Survey in their reports: estimated use of water in the united
states in 1985, and estimated use of water in the united states in 1990.
Thermal Electric: The thermal electric CU values reported by the United
Stated Geological Survey in their reports: estimated use of water in the united
states in 1985, and estimated use of water in the united states in 1990 were both
used.
Export: The export values were obtained from the State Engineer's Office.
Wildlife and Recreation values were not reported by the USGS or the USBR.
