CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 2.09-12
Consumptive Use Model
Non-Irrigation (Other Uses) Consumptive Uses and Losses
in the Yampa River Basin
1.0 ISSUE
This task memorandum formalizes the computation of non-irrigation categories such as livestock,
stockpond, municipal, thermal electric, mineral resource, export, fish and wildlife, and recreation
categories for the CRDSS consumptive use (CU) in the Yampa River Basin for calendar years
1985 to 1990. These categories are the same as those included in the USBR Colorado River
System Consumptive Uses and Losses Report (USBR, 1991) produced every five years.
2.0 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
The estimation of non-irrigation consumptive uses and losses from the entire Yampa River basin
can be performed either by county (Garfield, Moffat, Rio Blanco and Routt) or by hydrologic
unit HUC (14050001, 14050002 and 14050003). The US Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) used the
intersection of counties and Hydrologic Units as the subdivisions for the crop consumptive use in its
Colorado River System Consump tive Uses and Losses Report, 1981-1985 (USBR, 1991), but for
some of the other uses (e.g. thermoelectric, mine ral) they used either county or HUC depending on
the available data.
To preserve consistency with these published reports and the units of the source data, other use
data are reported in Hydrologic Units, County (calculated), or the intersection of County and
Hydrologic Unit boundaries. County data are determined based on GIS data showing the
percentage of each county contained in the Yampa River Basin.
2.1 Livestock
As in (USBR, 1991) three types of livestock are included: cattle, sheep and hogs. Table 1 shows
the average daily water consumption of each livestock type.
For the years 1985 to the present, the County Agricultural Statistics (CAS) no longer reports the
number of livestock by county instead this information is recorded for the entire state of
Colorado. Therefore, the US Census of agriculture was used.
This census is conducted every five years. The census data for 1982, 1987, and 1992 were used.
These data can be obtained from the US Census world wide web page at
http://sasquatch.kerr.orst.edu/ag-stateis.html.
Using linear interpolation, values for the years 1985-1990 were calculated. The calculated
numbers for each county were distributed by basin based on the area (obtained from GIS) of each
county contained in the Yampa River Basin (Garfield 2%, Moffat 72%, and Rio Blanco 10%,
Route 89%).
Table 2 shows the number of livestock type by County, and Table 3 shows a summary of the
estimated consumptive uses for 1985-1990.
01.21.96 1 02.09-12 IDS/CSU
