Description
This memorandum evaluates whether the USBR cutoff dates for the delivery of water to water-short alfalfa and pasture grass are appropriate or if new procedures for estimating cutoff dates should be developed for the Gunnison River basin.

The ditches analyzed in this investigation were selected from a list of 60 ditches for which the irrigated area
and crop distribution was provi ded by the State. To shorten the list of ditches to a workable number of 4 to
7 ditches, the following criteria were used:
The actual consumptive use values provided by CS U-IDS were tabulated monthly values in units
?
of 1,000 acre-feet to two decimal places (e.g. 1.00 = 1000 acre-feet, 0.01 = 10 acre-feet);
therefore, ditches with very small irrigated acr eages would be very sensitive to rounding to the
nearest 10 acre-feet. Thus, ditches with sma ll acreages were not considered for analysis.

Any ditch with a considerable amount of undefined irrigated acreage was excluded.
?

If a ditch did not irrigate alfalfa a nd/or pasture grass, it was excluded.
?

Any ditch for which diversion data were not available was excluded.
?

Any ditch for which consumptive use data were not available was excluded.
?

Any ditch that received a considerable amount of reservoir or project water was excluded.
?
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Cutoff Dates, 1985 - 1990
Using the USBR's recommended flow ra tes shown in Table 1, the actual cutoff dates for alfalfa and pasture
grass for 1985 through 1990 in the Gunnis on River basin were determined us ing streamflow records at the
three stream gaging stations. The results of this analysis are shown in Table 2.
TABLE 2
CUTOFF DATES FOR STREAM GAGING STATIONS
(GUNNISON RIVER BASIN ONLY)
CUTOFF
FLOWYEAR
STREAM-GAGECROPRATE198519861987198819891990
Smith Fork Alfalfa12 cfs7/268/17/227/127/5
near Crawford
Pasture Grass13 cfs7/257/317/217/117/57/21
Gunnison River Alfalfa7308/910/17/257/147/37/12
near Gunnison
Pasture Grass8008/89/227/157/106/307/3
Pasture Grass8708/79/77/147/95/66/30
Uncompahgre R.
