Title
CRDSS Task 1.14-18 - Consumptive Use Model - Review of U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Weather Stations and Recommended New Stations
Description
It was recommended in the Phase I CRDSS Task Memorandum 1.14-1 that the weather station sites be checked for representativeness. This memorandum addresses that recommendation as it pertains to the Gunnison River basin.

The map shows the
?
locations of the weather stations and the irrigated areas in the Gunnison River basin.

Review of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) topographic maps.
?
It is assumed in this report that if the elevation of the irrigated area is different than the elevation of the
weather station, the temperatures used to calculate consumptive use will be adjusted using appropriate
adiabatic lapse rates.
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The recommended changes for each hydrologic unit and county are summarized in Table 4 and are
discussed in the following text. In hydrologic units and counties where more than one weather station is
recommended, the weighting factor for each station has been determined by the IDS Group using its
geographic information system (GIS) technology.
Hydrologic Unit 14020001, Gunnison County
For this unit, the USBR recommended the Crested Butte station. Three weather stations, Crested Butte,
Taylor Park Dam, and Gunnison, could be used to calculate consumptive use in this unit. The difference
in precipitation, topography of the unit, and location of the stations with respect to the irrigated area are
the basis for the recommended changes. Analysis of precipitation records found that for Gunnison, Taylor
Park, and Crested Butte, the total May through September precipitation averages 5.55, 7.82, and 8.96
inches, respectively, and total annual precipitation averages 10.06, 17.12, and 22.23 inches, respectively.
The temperature data at the Taylor Park Dam station is not recommended because (1) it is located near the
base of the dam in the river canyon; and (2) April and May minimum temperatures are 8
3
A 275 01.09.95 1.14-18 Walter
