When separate ditches are used to irrigate a parcel of land independently, a method of assigning
irrigated crop acreage to key structures without double counting the land was developed. See
section 3.3.2 of this report for additional discussion of this topic.
3.1.3 Database Attributes
Database attributes attached to the service area vectors include the ditch ID, ditch name, the water
district, and a unique six digit number calculated from water district multiplied by 10,000 added to
the ditch ID. The water district field represents the water district that contains and administers the
ditch's head gate, although ditch coverage may extend into more than one water district.
3.1.4 Accuracy Refinements
In order to insure that the ditch service area coverage was as accurate as possible, two public
meetings were held to allow water users the opportunity to comment on the product. Thirty water
users attended the public meeting held in Antonito, CO sponsored by the Conej os Water
Conservancy District. An additional thirty-four water users attended the public meeting held in
Monte Vista, CO sponsored by the Rio Grande Conservation District. The purpose of these
meetings was to explain the irrigated acreage themes and explain how they should be interpreted.
These meetings also provided the water users with an opportunity to voice their concerns.
Concerned water users were given an opportunity to meet with us one-on-one to review the ditch
service areas for their canals and help us to refine the assessment. Subsequently, thirty-nine
interviews with sixty-four concerned individuals were held to verify and refine the ditch service
areas for the major ditches that encompass the maj ority of irrigated acreage. Appendix B contains a
list of the individual meetings that were held.
10
